Suuremõisa ( Swedish Storhovet , German  Großenhof ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Pühalepa ).

Description and history

The place is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ) at the strategic crossroads between Heltermaa , Kärdla and Käina .

With 187 inhabitants, Suuremõisa is the largest village in the rural parish. The area is 8.1 km².

The place name Großenhof was first mentioned in 1633. The settlement emerged from the village of Suur-Hallikakülla . The Evangelical Lutheran church was in the nearby village of Pühalepa , the Orthodox church in the village of Kuri .

In the 16th century, the place became the seat of the main estate of the island Hiiumaa. It maintained numerous additional goods and was the economic center of Hiiumaas for several centuries until the rise of the island's capital, Kärdla .

The castle-like mansion, completed in 1760, is one of the most magnificent baroque buildings in all of Estonia.

Around the mansion there is a park which, with an area of ​​45 hectares, is the largest on Hiiumaa Island. It is under nature protection.

Personalities

The most famous daughter of the village was the Soviet-Estonian politician Meta Vannas (1924–2002), who was born in Suuremõisa. The bearer of the Order of Lenin was a minister in the Estonian SSR from 1969 to 1975 and then held high posts in the Supreme Soviet of the Estonian SSR until 1985.
