The so-called “sacrificial oak” from Tärkma

Tärkma is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Emmaste ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

Description and history

Tärkma (German Terkma ) has 21 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). The place is one kilometer southeast of the village of Emmaste on the Baltic Sea beach . Tärkma is located on Soela väin ( Sele Sound ), the waterway between the islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa ( Ösel ).

In 1564 the Terckma servants were first mentioned in a document. Before the establishment of the Emmaste estate, at the end of the 18th century, a boat connection went from Tärkma to the largest Estonian island Saaremaa. In winter there was a 17-kilometer path on the ice of the frozen Baltic Sea from Tärkma to the neighboring island.

At the beginning of the 19th century, during the continental dam in Tärkma, salt production began. At that time, the high prices made the extraction worthwhile, even if the salt content in the water of the Baltic Sea is low.

Sacrificial oak

Tärkma is known today for an oak that is over 300 years old. It is also known as the "sacrificial oak" because residents and visitors are said to have made offerings there until the 20th century. The effect should be particularly great on Thursday evening.

The tree is twelve meters high and five meters in circumference.
