The rural community Emmaste ( Estonian Emmaste vald , German: Emmast ) is a former community in the southwest of the Estonian district of Hiiu ( Hiiu maakond ).

Location and description

Emmaste was one of the four rural communities on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ). It was about forty kilometers from the island's capital, Kärdla . The area was 197.5 km². The rural community had a 63-kilometer-long Baltic coast . 62% of the area was covered by forest.

The rural community had 1,102 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). The most important settlements were next to the capital Emmaste ( Emmaste küla ) the villages Jausa , Leisu , Metsalauka and Riidaküla .

The port of Sõru is of economic importance . From there ferries run regularly to the largest Estonian island, Saaremaa ( Ösel ). There is also a museum in the village.

Villages

In addition to the main town Emmaste (217 inhabitants), the municipality also included the villages ( külad )

history

During the Middle Ages, the area belonged to the Bishop of Saare-Länne ( Ösel-Wiek ). The independent parish of Emmaste was founded in 1866. The following year the church at Emmaste was completed. The rural community was established at the end of the 19th century. Until 1950 it belonged to the Lääne County .

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the districts were abolished. Instead, the Estonian SSR was divided into Rajons. The rural community of Emmaste was created after Estonian independence was regained in 1992. In 2017 all parishes on Hiiumaa merged to form the new rural parish Hiiumaa .
