The Diocese of Ösel-Wiek was founded in 1228 by Bishop Albert von Buxhöveden on the Estonian island of Ösel .

From 1255 it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Riga . In addition to the island of Ösel, it also included parts of the island of Dagö as well as today's Estonian mainland in the west, which was then called Wiek . After several changes, the seat was in Arensburg . The bishops were prince-bishops and imperial princes until 1559 . With the arrival of the Reformation , the diocese was dissolved. In 1560 Ösel fell to the Kingdom of Denmark , while Dagö was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sweden in 1563. In 1645 Ösel also fell to Sweden. After the Great Northern War in 1721, in the Peace of Nystad, the territory of the dissolved diocese went completely to the Russian Empire , where it remained until 1918.
