(849) Ara is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 9 February 1912 by the Russian astronomer Sergei Ivanovich Beljavski the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in simeiz was discovered.

The name of the asteroid is derived from ARA, the abbreviation for American Relief Administration , a US relief operation to fight a famine in Europe and the Soviet Union after the First World War .
