Rootsi is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (2013 to 2017: rural municipality Hiiu , before that rural municipality Kõrgessaare ) on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

Description and history

Rootsi has 16 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). The area used to belong to the village of Reigi .

The name of the village translates as "Sweden". In 1781, almost all of Hiiumaa's Swedish-born residents were deported to Ukraine on the orders of the Russian government , where they founded the Gammalsvenskby colony in 1782 . The place name Rootsi was created afterwards. It referred to one of the last places where Swedish-speaking residents still lived on Hiiumaa.
