Ruins of the Puski Orthodox Church

Puski is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Hiiumaa (2013 to 2017: rural municipality Hiiu , before that rural municipality Kõrgessaare ) on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

description

Puski (German also Puski , Swedish Buskby or Buskas ) is located 22 kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kärdla ( Kertel ).

The place has only one permanent resident (as of December 31, 2011). Until the late 1930s, the population in Puski was relatively large. With the Second World War and the subsequent military use of Hiiumaas by the Red Army until the beginning of the 1990s, the population then fell sharply.

Nativity Church

The landmark of the place is the Orthodox Nativity of Christ Church .

In 1884, under the sign of the Russification of Estonia, around 700 residents of the region converted from the Lutheran to the Russian Orthodox faith .

The church was built between 1889 and 1891 in a quiet pine forest according to plans by the architect K. Nyman. It was one of Hiiumaa's four Orthodox churches built during the Russification period.

The church was used until 1951 when it was closed by the Soviet occupation authorities. After that it fell into disrepair and is now only a ruin. Next to the church is the town's historic cemetery. It is 1.7 hectares in size.

At the same time as the church, an Orthodox parish school was built in Puski. The building is also derelict today.
