Valipe
Valipe is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Pühalepa ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).
Description and history
Valipe (German Wallipäh ) has 3 residents (as of December 31, 2011). The place is located on the south coast of Hiiumaas, two kilometers southeast of Suuremõisa ( Großenhof ).
In 1254, in Valipe , the Livonian Order began building its first fortress on Hiiumaa. The "Wallepe Steinhaus", however, remained unfinished.
In 1563 Hiiumaa came to the Swedish crown. In 1576 the new rulers built a small hill , the so-called "Jürgensburg", near the place . Today a few square pieces of wall and the remains of a well of the fortification can be seen.
In 1529 the Valipe estate was mentioned in a document. From 1571 to 1596 it belonged to a certain Pastor Mauritz Matzon. In the 16th and 17th centuries there was a port near Valipe.
