Artur Lemba (born September 24, 1885 in Reval (Tallinn), † November 21, 1963 there ) was an Estonian composer.

Life

Artur Lemba was born into an Estonian family of musicians. The family later moved to Saint Petersburg . Lemba studied piano and composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory until 1908, among others with Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow .

In 1908 Lemba's Symphony No. 1 in C sharp minor , the first symphony by an Estonian composer, was premiered in Saint Petersburg. Artur Lemba was the first professional Estonian pianist alongside his brother Theodor Lemba .

From 1908 to 1920 he worked in Russia as a teacher for the piano, since 1915 with the title of professor. With Estonia's independence from Russia, Lemba moved from Petrograd to Tallinn in 1920 . After a short interlude in Helsinki , he worked from 1923 to 1962 as a professor of piano at the Tallinn Conservatory . From 1923 to 1939 he was also a music critic for the newspaper Vaba Maa . He composed numerous musical works. His opera Kalmuneid was premiered in Tallinn in 1929, the opera Armastus ja surm in 1931 and the opera Elga in 1934 .
