Theodor Lemba

Theodor Lemba (born September 27, jul. / 9. October  1876 greg. In Reval ; † 16th May 1962 in New York City ) was an Estonian pianist. He is considered the first Estonian concert pianist.

Life and music

Theodor Lemba was born into a family of musicians. His brother was the pianist and composer Artur Lemba (1885–1963), his sister the mezzo-soprano Ludmilla Hellat-Lemba (1879–1945). Theodor Lemba completed his piano studies with Felix Blumenfeld and Karel van Ark at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1901 .

Theodor Lemba celebrated successes at performances in Western Europe as well as in Russia , especially together with the Czech violinist Jan Kubelík . In 1904 Lemba attended master classes in Vienna with Theodor Leschetizky .

From 1905 to 1914 Lemba taught at the music school in Riga , Livonia , of which he was director and co-owner. From 1915 to 1922 he was a lecturer at the Conservatory in Petrograd , from 1919 with the title of professor. Then he went back to his Estonian homeland. There he taught piano at the Tallinn Conservatory from 1922 to 1944 .

In 1944 Lemba fled to Germany before the Soviet occupation of Estonia . In 1949 he emigrated to the USA , where he settled in Great Falls (Montana) .
