Jan Kubelík
Jan Kubelík (born July 5, 1880 in Prague ; † December 5, 1940 , ibid) was a Czech violinist and composer .
Life
Kubelík perfected his violin playing as a child , practicing 10 to 12 hours a day. He later studied at the Prague Conservatory with Otakar Ševčík .
From 1898 Kubelík toured as a soloist and delighted with his virtuosity and flawless violin playing, in 1902 he led the Czech Philharmonic to London and he was awarded a gold medal by the Royal Philharmonic Society . On August 25, 1903, Kubelík married Marianne Csaky, a niece of the Hungarian Prime Minister Kálmán Széll, in Debrezin . In addition to performances and recordings as a violinist, he also composed, among other things, six violin concertos . The composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster assisted him in composing the first concert . In 1904 Kubelík acquired part of the Kolín manor with the Býchory Castle . Kubelík has given concerts in the USA, South America, Australia, India, China and the Soviet Union. He bought a villa in Opatija, Yugoslavia .
In the 1930s, Kubelík was threatened with financial ruin. The reason was the purchase of the Rotenturm Castle in Burgenland . Kubelík died of cancer in 1940. He was buried in the Vyšehrad cemetery .
Kubelík played on a Stradivarius , which was built in 1715.
His son was the conductor and composer Rafael Kubelík ; Carl Sandburg honored him literarily in Chicago Poems (1916).
