Otakar Ševčík (born March 22, 1852 in Horažďovice , † January 18, 1934 in Písek ) was a Czech violinist .

biography

The son of a teacher and director of the church choir studied violin at the Prague Academic Gymnasium and from 1866 to 1870 at the Conservatory. After graduating from high school, he worked as concertmaster at the Salzburg Mozarteum from 1870 to 1873 , later in Vienna , Poland and Kiev, Russia . Ševčík became known as a violin soloist as well as a chamber musician and played with Eugène Ysaÿe , among others . This and future stays abroad contributed to his fame in his extensive teaching activities.

After an eye disease he stopped his concert activities and taught at the Tsarist Music School in Kiev from 1875 to 1892 , then for 14 years at the Prague Conservatory . In 1909 he returned to Vienna and taught there for nine years at the Vienna Music Academy . After the establishment of Czechoslovakia, he returned to his homeland and was appointed professor at the Conservatory. He was invited three times to longer educational stays in the USA, including to Boston , Chicago and New York , led masterclasses in Mondsee and held masterclasses in England at the age of 81 .

In 1957, Sevcikgasse in Vienna- Liesing (23rd district) was named after him.

Textbooks for violin

His violin studies and violin methods are still among the most important teaching works for violin students today. His most famous students include Karl Thomann , Jan Kubelík and Jaroslav Kocian .

These studies include Der Kleine Ševčík , an elementary violin school that teaches the semitone system in 149 exercises as well as the school of violin technique, first position , vol. II: second to seventh position and vol. III. Shifting, and Preparatory Exercises in Double-Stopping , op.9.
