Jaroslav Kocian (born February 22, 1883 in Wildenschwert , Bohemia, † March 8, 1950 in Prague ) was a Czech violin teacher and composer .

Life

Jaroslav Kocian received his first basic knowledge of violin playing from his father, the violin teacher Julius Kocian. He made further studies from 1896 to 1901 at the Prague Conservatory , with Otakar Ševčík (violin) and Antonín Dvořák (composition). In 1907 he received a professorship at the Odessa Conservatory for two years and became primary violinist of the local string quartet. He made the highest demands on the pianists who were his chamber music partners, as he was himself an excellent pianist.

After more than two decades of successful career as an internationally active violin virtuoso all over Europe and the USA, he received the post of assistant Ševčík in Prague in 1921. In 1924 he received a professorship at the master school of the conservatory, where he taught until 1943. In the meantime, in 1939 and 1940, he was rector of the conservatory.

His hometown Ústí nad Orlicí gave him the title of honorary citizen and since 1959 there has been an annual competition for young violinists named after him.

Many of his works were performed by his pupil Josef Suk and recorded on phonograms. Only relatively few of his compositions for violin and piano, which have come down to us in manuscripts, have been published so far. In addition to these works, Kocian composed numerous songs and chants, and he also arranged works by other composers for violin and piano, such as Dvořáks (Waltz op. 54) and Josef Suks (love song). Together with his father, Kocian published a violin lesson for beginners Počátky hry na housle .
