Mart Saar was one of the most famous and respected composers of his time. His early years were strongly influenced by the music of the 19th century. In later times he combined more and more contemporary music with influences from traditional Estonian folk music. His choral works with Estonian poems (some of which he wrote himself) are still among the most famous songs in Estonia.
