Harri Otsa

Harri Otsa (born November 3, 1926 in Tallinn ; † October 30, 2001 there ) was an Estonian composer .

Early years

Harri Otsa attended the renowned Gustav Adolf Grammar School in Tallinn. In 1944 he was drafted into the German army and seriously wounded. He lived in Germany until 1946 , but then went back to his homeland.

Otsa studied music theory at the Tallinn Music School from 1946 to 1948 and then composition with Mart Saar at the Tallinn Conservatory, now the Estonian Academy of Music . In 1953 he passed his exam.

Harri Otsa worked at the Tallinn Music School from 1953 to 1962. From 1962 to 1988 he was a lecturer in music theory at the Tallinn Conservatory.

Harri Otsa has become internationally known especially as a composer. His most important works include the operas Paula pulm and Tooma tohter (both 1967) as well as five Estonian dances for symphony orchestra and two piano concertos (1977 and 1981).
