Ester Mägi was probably the most important composer in Estonia in the 20th century. Her piano sonata (1949), the Trio in D minor (1950), a piano concerto (1953), a violin concerto (1958), a symphony (1968) and her composition Pietà (1990) are particularly famous . Her orchestral work Bukoolika (1983) was often heard under conductors such as Eri Klas and Peeter Lilje as the “calling card of Estonian music” at guest performances abroad.

In addition, Ester Mägi has composed numerous works of chamber music and choral music. The influences of traditional Estonian folk music can be seen in her artistic work.

In addition to her work as a composer, she was a lecturer in music theory at the Tallinn Conservatory from 1954 to 1984 .
