Arvo Volmer

Arvo Volmer (born November 4, 1962 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian conductor .

After graduating from high school Arvo Volmer studied from 1980 to 1985 the subject orchestral conducting ( operas - and symphony orchestra ) at the Estonian Music Academy in Tallinn and from 1985 to 1990 at the Conservatory in Leningrad . Since 1985 he has worked as a conductor in Estonia.

He achieved his international breakthrough with the Nikolai Malko Competition in Copenhagen in 1989 .

Arvo Volmer was chief conductor of the Estonian State Symphony Orchestra (ERSO) from 1993 to 2001 . From 1994 to 2005 he was artistic director and chief conductor of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra ( Oulu Sinfonia ) in Finland . He was musical director of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra from 2004 to 2013 and artistic director and chief conductor of the Estonia National Opera in Tallinn from 2004 to 2012 . In 2015 he became chief conductor of the Haydn Orchestra in Bolzano and Trento.

Arvo Volmer has also been a guest conductor of numerous internationally known orchestras, especially in Scandinavia . Volmer's recordings include the full orchestral works by Leevi Madetoja and all of Eduard Tubin's symphonies . He is considered one of the leading interpreters of the work of Jean Sibelius .
