City-Umland-Bahn Munich

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Stadt-Umland-Bahn Munich (SUB) is the concept of a ring-shaped, rail-bound local transport system in the periphery of Munich , which is required by passenger, transport and environmental associations as well as some politicians and transport planners in the region. Proponents consider it sensible to set up a tangential system in addition to the existing, star-shaped S-Bahn network, which connects the radial Munich subways and the surrounding communities with one another. This city-surrounding railway would have an intermediate position between the S-Bahn and the inner-city Munich tram . Preparatory planning or even construction never took place.

The classic Karlsruhe model acted as a stimulus. In Karlsruhe , private railway lines and abandoned freight railway lines into the region have been taken over by the urban (later regionally operated) tram since the 1960s, and since the 1980s they have been used by dual-system vehicles in the inner city as well as in the regional railway area . A takeover of this model fails in Bavaria due to conflicts or a lack of compatibility between the Free State of Bavaria, which mainly commissioned S-Bahn and regional trains, and the operators of the urban trams.

Routing

So far, there has been no draft phase for routes. The following routes were discussed:

controversy

The basic conflict mentioned can also be seen in the course of the most promising route on the Munich SUB pilot route. This was originally supposed to lead from Dachau and Karlsfeld via Munich North to the Munich Exhibition Center. In principle, such a planning corridor could link two end points with (for very different reasons) high international visitor traffic with four S-Bahn trains, two to the airport, four underground trains and three tram routes. However, the route was planned in the city center via a heavily traveled DB freight line ( Nordring ), which is almost unsuitable for public transport (several 100 m distance to subway stops, awkward crossing of the Isar, priority of freight traffic, hardly any residential areas connected) and also by DB will not be released in the foreseeable future.

The proposal of an expert to plan the SUB via a new tram route to be built instead of the north ring and to continue it into the surrounding area was brought to the Munich city council by the responsible committee, but was rejected there in 2004. Instead of planning an independent route, attempts were still made to inquire about the use of the DB Nordring, which was not possible. A continuation of the project was rejected by the shareholders' meeting of the MVV, it is currently suspended.

history

Plans for the city-surrounding railway have existed since December 1997. Between 2001 and 2004 a feasibility study and an operating concept were drawn up.

Since 2014, the SUB topic has been continued as part of the Inzell Initiative in the “City and Surrounding Area” forum and the route variants - possibly also with bus lines as a preliminary stage - are to be reflected in greater depth with future settlement developments. Planned routes will be kept free, but no further implementation is currently taking place. In the medium term, the expansion of the Munich tram from Pasing and on to Freiham could expand the tram network to and beyond the city limits. With this and with the establishment of the Munich metropolitan region as a new planning association, there are new opportunities for expansion into the surrounding area in the medium term.

The Bavarian Ministry of the Interior , the Munich planning department and the MVV are carrying out a feasibility study for S-Bahn traffic on Munich's Nordring. BMW is campaigning for better connections to its research and innovation center via such a connection.
