The Christopeit Sport Arena (until 2012: Stadion zur Sonnenblume ) is a football stadium in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Velbert . history

The facility was built in 1969 in four months and 23 days and originally offered space for 10,000 spectators. The first game rose on October 5, 1969 against TSV Marl-Hüls . In front of 8,500 spectators, SSVg Velbert won 2-0. The previous attendance record was set a short time later on October 19, 1969 in a game against Wuppertaler SV , which ended 1: 3, with 13,000 spectators. At the beginning of 2012 the stadium was named Christopeit Sport Arena. The contract with the sports equipment manufacturer runs until 2018. The stadium is in dire need of renovation. On November 13, 2007 the city council decided to build a new sports center. As soon as this center is finished, the Christopeit Sport Arena will be given up. The property will then be sold.

When the construction of the new football stadium will start has not yet been determined. According to the city of Velbert, the Christopeit Sport Arena should be preserved for a few more years in 2015 and, thanks to the support of the sponsors EMKA and Grimmert, renovation work was carried out in the cabin area of cabins, showers, physiotherapy areas and general areas.

The location of the new Velbert stadium was checked in April 2016. There were two possibilities for discussion. Either the previous stadium should be demolished, apartments built there and a new stadium built at the sports center, or the sunflower stadium will be retained and renovated. The free area at the sports center is then to be turned into a commercial area. In November 2016, the sports committee of the city of Velbert approved the plans for a new football stadium. The new building should meet the requirements of the DFB for the regional league and will initially offer 1,000 covered seats and 2,000 standing places. If necessary, it should be expandable to 5,000 places. There is also a floodlight system and 500 parking spaces. It is assumed that the construction planning and the call for tenders will be completed in 2017. Construction work on the seven million euro stadium project should start in 2018. The inauguration was planned for the 2019/20 season.

A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place in June 2019, the topping-out ceremony took place on November 8 of that year, and construction of the stadium should be completed by summer 2020. The construction costs are now estimated at 9.8 million euros. At the end of July, the SSVg Velbert moved into the stadium in the EMKA sports center. After the official acceptance of the construction of the new stadium and the two associated artificial turf pitches , play is to start on September 6th with preparatory games for the Oberliga Niederrhein 2020/21 . The “Am Berg” sports facility remains the club's training facility. From now on, the Christopeit Sport Arena will only be used by the city.
