Nikolai is a place in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area in the US state of Alaska with the status City with 94 inhabitants (2014).

Nikolai is located on the South Fork River, a headwaters of the Kuskokwim River , 310 kilometers northwest of Anchorage and 380 kilometers southwest of Fairbanks . The Denali National Park begins about 100 kilometers away to the east.

history

Russian Orthodox Church

First settlers settled in the area in the 1880s. In 1918 the current location was chosen and named after its founder, who was named Nikolai. A small trading post and roadhouse were set up during the North American gold rush . A Russian Orthodox Church ( Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church ) was built in 1927, a school in 1948, and an aircraft runway in 1963. In 1970 the City of Nikolai was founded .

Economy and transportation

The livelihoods of the residents are primarily the supply of plant-based food from the area as well as hunting, trapping and fishing activities. Due to the cold winter periods, they are also dependent on bringing in large stocks of wood for heating purposes. The sale, import and possession of alcohol are prohibited in Nikolai.

During the summer months, Nikolai can be reached easily by air or water. In winter, the place can be reached on the frozen river by snowmobile or dog sled . Nikolai is also a checkpoint as part of the Iditarod , the world's longest dog sled race .
