Dokuchaievsk ( Ukrainian Докучаєвськ ; Russian Докучаевск Dokuchaievsk ) is a city of regional significance in the east of Ukraine with about 23,554 inhabitants (2019).
There are several karst caves and a zoo in the city .
geography
The city is located in the Donets Basin in Donetsk Oblast, 38 km south of the Donetsk Oblast center . The village of Jasne ( Ясне in Ukrainian ) also belongs to the municipality, and the place is completely enclosed by Wolnowacha Rajon .
history
The place was founded in 1912 as a mining town for the workers of the local limestone - and dolomite - Quarries under the name Oleniwski Karjery (Ukrainian Оленівські Кар'єри , "Quarry of Oleniwka "). In 1954, the place received the status of a city and was renamed after the Russian geologist , mineralogist and geographer Vasily Dokuchayev in Dokuchayevsk. In 1992 the city was elevated to a city of regional importance.
In autumn 2014 the city was occupied by separatist troops of the Donetsk People's Republic during the Ukraine War and, according to the Ukrainian government, belongs to an area in which the organs of state power temporarily do not exercise their powers.
