Lyman ( Ukrainian Лиман ; Russian Лиман Liman ) is the northernmost city in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine . The city with 21,000 inhabitants (2019) is the administrative center of the Lyman district .
The city is a railway junction with a train station including a marshalling yard on the Kharkiv – Horlivka railway and to the industrial centers of the Donets Basin and is therefore also known as the " North Gate of Donbass ".
Another name for the city is " Donetsk Switzerland " because of the pine forests and blue lakes in the area. Therefore, in addition to the railway operation, tourism is an important source of income for the city, because the beautiful and quiet environment not only attracts tourists and mushroom pickers, but also hunters who come across wild boars, deer, foxes, hares and sometimes wolves in the forests.

The city is located in the Donbass seven kilometers north from the shores of Seversky Donets , 25 kilometers northeast of the nearest big city Slavyansk and 135 km north of the Oblastzentrums Donetsk .
For the township include, besides the city itself, nor the villages Brussiwka ( Брусівка ) Staryj Karawan ( Старий Караван ) and Schtschurowe ( Щурове ) and the settlement Stawky ( Ставки ).
history
Founded by the Cossacks in 1667 as Lyman (Лиман), the place was called Krasnyj Lyman (Красний Лиман) from 1925 to February 4, 2016 . The place has had the status of a city since 1938. In the course of the Second World War it was freed from occupation by the Wehrmacht on February 1, 1943 . Since November 26, 1979, Lyman has the status of a city under oblast administration.
