Railway stations in Hessen |
The Weilburg Station is a train station in the central Hessian town of Weilburg . The station is on the Lahn Valley Railway . From 1890 to 1988 the Weiltalbahn branched off directly behind the train station in the direction of Weilmünster .
history
Weilburg station was initially built as the terminus of the Lahntalbahn in the course of the opening of the section between the Limburg (Lahn) and Weilburg stations, which went into operation on October 14, 1862.
On November 1, 1891, the Weiltalbahn from Weilburg to Weilmünster was inaugurated. After the continuation to Usingen was put into operation on June 1, 1909, the trains - at times also express trains - could run from Weilburg to Frankfurt am Main . Weilburg became a traffic junction and transfer station. This connection ended when passenger traffic between Weilmünster and Weilburg was suspended on September 27, 1969 . On this section, goods traffic was operated in the transfer procedure until January 30, 1988 . After that, Weilburg station lost its function as a freight traffic hub.
Before the Hessentag in Weilburg in 2005 , the central platform in the Weilburg train station was renewed and adapted to be handicapped accessible. The additional makeshift platform for the Hessentag was then removed again.
As part of the “ESTW Untere Lahntalbahn” construction program, it is planned to replace the existing signal boxes with central signal boxes in the operations center.

Reception building
The listed entrance building was designed as a late Classicist building by Heinrich Velde and is similar to the station buildings of Leun / Braunfels and Diez , which also originate from his designs. Between the gable, raised head buildings there is an eaves wing with a pent roof hall in front, which was rebuilt after the destruction in the war. The cornices and the gables have decorative motifs.
Engine shed
From 1890, Weilburg was the starting point of the Weiltalbahn, which ran to Grävenwiesbach . For this purpose, a locomotive shed with a turntable was built at Weilburg station . The buildings were demolished in the 1980s. The former freight station has also been largely dismantled except for four tracks.
Railway tunnel
Directly behind the Weilburg train station is the 302 m long Weilburg railway tunnel. In addition to a car tunnel and a ship tunnel, this is part of the so-called "Weilburger tunnel ensemble".
Connection
The station is located in the tariff area of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV).
train
The train station is served every hour by regional trains on the Limburg (Lahn) –Weilburg– Wetzlar - Gießen route (sometimes further to Alsfeld / Fulda ). The operator until December 2011 was Deutsche Bahn AG. Since the 2011/2012 timetable change on December 11, 2011, the RB services on this section of the Lahntalbahn have been carried out by Hessische Landesbahn GmbH (HLB). Alstom Coradia Lint 41 (DB class 648) railcars are used for this . The regional express trains of the DB (RE 25) on the route Koblenz Hbf - Limburg (Lahn) - Weilburg - Wetzlar - Gießen stop every two hours at Weilburg station. For the RE services, railcars of the type Alstom Coradia Lint 27 and Lint 41 (series 640 and 648) as well as Bombardier Talent (series 643) are used. Sometimes HLB regional trains also end in Weilburg on weekdays.
