Social Science Thesaurus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Social Sciences Thesaurus is a systematically ordered compilation of social science terms. It is the central keyword vocabulary for content research in the social science specialist portal sowiport and an essential indexing tool for the social science literature and project databases of GESIS - Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences .

General

The Social Sciences Thesaurus was developed for the indexing of social science literature and research projects and their research in the databases SOFIS (Social Science Research Information System) and SOLIS (Social Science Literature Information System). It is also used as a cataloging and research tool in the social science open access full-text repository SSOAR (Social Science Open Access Repository) .

Since the social sciences portal sowiport went online, the social sciences thesaurus has also been the central keyword index for content searches in all of the national and international specialist databases integrated in sowiport. For this purpose, the thesaurus for social sciences was linked with all indexing vocabularies in the specialist databases integrated in sowiport. The Social Sciences Thesaurus has thus become the central vocabulary that bridges a large number of other relevant national and international specialist and universal thesauri (including Thesaurus for Sociological Indexing Terms and Common Authority File)

The Social Sciences Thesaurus is available in German, English and French and is constantly being further developed in line with new topics in social science research. With currently more than 8,000 headwords and around 4,000 synonym links, it covers all disciplines of the social sciences.

The social sciences thesaurus is freely accessible in interactive form with its own user interface in the specialist portal sowiport. In addition to alphabetical and systematic access, the thesaurus translations as well as the cross concordances to the vocabularies of the specialist databases integrated in sowiport are displayed.

In addition, terms from the humanities, natural and technical sciences (e.g. dialectics , genetics , CAD ) as well as non-scientific vocabulary from subject areas that are the subject of the social sciences (e.g. housing ) are included in the Thesaurus for Social Sciences.

Social sciences thesaurus as SKOS version

In order to network the Thesaurus Social Sciences on the Internet with other indexing vocabularies, it was converted in 2009 to the W3C standard SKOS ( Simple Knowledge Organization System ) for the uniform publication of thesauri on the Internet.

In addition to self-defined so-called extensions, it contains cross concordances to the Standard Thesaurus for Economics (STW) of the ZBW - German Central Library for Economics - Leibniz Information Center for Economics . The SKOS version of the Social Sciences Thesaurus can be downloaded from the GESIS - Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences homepage.
