Cross concordance

A cross-concordance represents a relation between two documentation language or phrase systems forth. To do this, concepts in one system are related to equivalents in another system. This allows, for example, different thesauri from different libraries to be linked with one another, so that search queries in one library can also be used in another library without reformulation, although the works can be categorized by keywords in different ways.

Cross concordances can be created manually by experts or determined automatically using statistical methods. In both cases, relations are sought which transfer terms of one vocabulary to terms of a second vocabulary that are as similar as possible. These relations do not have to be symmetrical and can be linked with different meanings.

The exchange of cross concordances is facilitated by the techniques of the Semantic Web , since all concepts can be referenced uniformly by URI . The Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) provides various mapping relationships for this.
