The Laguna Cuzcachapa is the crater lake of a volcano in the Santa Ana department in western El Salvador, extinct decades ago .

The approximately one square kilometer large and tree-framed Laguna Cuzcachapa is located on the eastern edge of the city of Chalchuapa at an altitude of about 700 m above sea level. d. M. The lake has neither inflows nor outflows; its water level is only regulated by rainfall. Depending on the water level, the crater walls of the lake drop from the surrounding land area by around 20 m to 25 m.
history
The crater lake, which never dries out, was probably the reason for early settlement in the region, which could possibly go back to around 5000 BC. Goes back to BC. The Mayan cities of Tazumal and Casa Blanca, built much later, as well as other smaller archaeological sites in the area, indicate continued settlement.
