The Social Science Open Access Repository (SSOAR) is a freely accessible document server on the Internet that makes scientific articles from the social sciences freely available. SSOAR is operated and further developed by GESIS - Leibniz Institute for Social Sciences .

history

The aim of the “Social Science Open Access Repository” project funded by the DFG was to set up a full text server for the social sciences in order to counteract the fragmentation of the publication landscape in the open access area and to improve the international visibility of German research results.

SSOAR was set up during the two-year project period (2007–2008) using the example of qualitative research. In particular, through networking with the Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung (FQS), the largest international open access journal for qualitative research, texts by German-speaking authors were initially included in SSOAR, and texts by non-German authors followed.

SSOAR has since been opened to the entire field of social sciences and can be freely used by anyone interested.

Target groups

Scientists are addressed as prosumers , i.e. in the dual role of producers and consumers of knowledge. In principle, SSOAR is open to all social scientists as well as scientists from related fields of science to enter texts.

In addition to individual scientists who can post their texts in SSOAR, related series and journals are also included in cooperation with the respective editors, publishers and institutional partners.

SSOAR is open to authors from all countries and can be navigated in German and English.

Open Access

SSOAR bundles quality-checked literature relevant to social science and makes it available in Open Access in accordance with the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Scientific Knowledge .

In order to cover a broad scientific base, SSOAR pursues different acquisition strategies. The posting of full texts is done by the scientists themselves as well as via mass and individual imports in cooperation with social science institutions, subject-specific infrastructure providers, publishers and editors.

SSOAR essentially takes the path of Green Open Access and sees itself as a second publisher of quality-checked literature.

DINI certificate

SSOAR archives quality-checked texts and bears the DINI certificate 2016 "Open Access Repositories and Publication Services" awarded by the German Initiative for Network Information (DINI) . The DINI certificate confirms compliance with formal and technical standards as well as quality criteria for Open Access document servers.

Services

SSOAR makes different types of documents available which are enriched with detailed meta information and which can be found quickly using the search function. Users can upload their own electronic documents. The data stored in SSOAR lyrics are permanently on stable URN scientifically quotable. The URN are assigned in cooperation with the German National Library . Ssoar provides export bibliographic data using BibTex / Endnote export and different citation styles . A web feed provides information about publications on SSOAR.
