Viktor Viktorovych Yanukovych ( Ukrainian Віктор Вікторович Янукович ; born July 16, 1981 in Jenakijewo , Donetsk Oblast ; † March 20, 2015 in Lake Baikal off the island of Olkhon , Russia ) was a Ukrainian politician . He was the youngest son of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych .

Life

Viktor Yanukovych Junior studied economics at the Donetsk University . After completing his studies, he initially held management positions in various companies in the Donetsk region.

In the 2006 parliamentary elections , he was first elected to the Verkhovna Rada ; he was able to defend his parliamentary mandate in the 2007 and 2012 elections. Among other things, he was a member of the parliamentary committee for transport and communication and was temporarily the chairman of the youth organization of the Party of Regions .

Yanukovych was a motor sportsman and in 2011 won a race in the “Ukraine Trophy” event. Since January 2013 he has been President of the Federation d'automobile Ukraine FAU (Автомобильной Федерации Украины).

On March 6, 2014, the Council of the European Union in Brussels imposed restrictive measures against Yanukovych with Regulation 208/2014. This is justified by the criminal prosecution of Yanukovych to investigate crimes related to the embezzlement of Ukrainian public funds and the illegal transfer of these funds abroad.

Viktor Viktorovich Yanukovych drowned in Lake Baikal in Russia on the evening of March 20, 2015 . According to press reports, he was at the northern tip of the island Olkhon (Cape Choboi) with a VW bus drove out onto the ice of the lake. When the ice broke, the five other occupants were able to free themselves from the vehicle in time and were rescued. Yanukovych was later found dead from the ice hole. He was buried on March 23rd in a military cemetery in Sevastopol .
