The first settlement took place in 1833 by Horace Woodbridge. In 1842 the Town of Pleasant Prairie was formed, an administrative unit corresponding to the townships in most of the US states. Little by little, parts of the village were allocated to the neighboring city of Kenosha . In 1989 the remaining part of the town was incorporated as the Village of Pleasant Prairie .

In 1911, a large part of the town was destroyed by an explosion at the local dynamite factory.
