Decommunization in Ukraine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The de-communization in Ukraine ( Ukrainian Декомунізація в Україні , with decommunisation translated) officially began in April 2015 with the adoption of several laws prohibiting the use of communist symbols.

These laws were then signed and enacted by the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on May 15, 2015.

The individual laws are:

  • Law on the Condemnation of the Communist and National Socialist Totalitarian Regimes in Ukraine and the Prohibition of Propaganda Using Their Symbols
  • Law on access to the archives of the repressive organs of the communist totalitarian regime of 1917-1991
  • Law on Perpetuating Victory over Nazism in World War II 1939-1945
  • Law on the Legal Status and Memory of the Fighters for the Independence of Ukraine in the 20th Century

This marked the beginning of a six-month phase in which all communist monuments (except those with reference to World War II ) had to be removed and squares and streets were renamed with communist names. As a result of these efforts, the Ukrainian Institute for National Remembrance issued a list of places to be renamed Commissioned with the implementation in May 2016, after which the decisions to be made for the renaming would have been carried out by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine .

As a result of the law, the Communist Party of Ukraine was banned on July 24, 2015. Lenin , Dzerzhinsky , Kirov and Komsomol monuments have now been dismantled by the state ( angry citizens had demolished some monuments since Euromaidan 2013). At the end of 2016 it was announced that 1,320 Lenin monuments were demolished and 51,500 streets were renamed this year.

Overall, around 3% of all inhabited places in Ukraine were renamed, the following resolutions were passed in 2016:
