The nature reserve extends north of the railway line of the Cöln-Mindener Eisenbahn , near the Dortmund-Scharnhorst train station . In the north, the large settlement of Scharnhorst borders the area, in the east the Kurler Busch nature reserve . As early as 1926, the Körnebach was turned into a sewer to discharge the wastewater from the mining industry and the surrounding settlements. Only after extensive renaturation measures has the Körnebach been a pure water course again since 2006. Due to the expansion of the Körnebach, the Alte Körne increasingly dried up. In addition, an artificial watershed was created in the Körneaue due to mountain subsidence , which resulted in the surface water flowing from the southeast corner of the Scharnhorst settlement in a westerly direction into a pumping station and only in an easterly direction using the bed of the Alte Körne and through its floodplain forest , overgrown Part with a damp mixed alder forest , until the Körnebach flows.

Mountain subsidence created pools and ponds in the alluvial forest. These standing waters, together with the flowing waters of the Alte Körne, shape the nature reserve. Sedges and tall perennials grow on the banks of the river . These alluvial forests are surrounded by arable and grassland areas , some of which are used intensively, but some of which are fallow , but are criss-crossed by strips of wood and field trees. In addition, there are deciduous forests rich in old wood in the northern and southern areas, with oak , hornbeam and, in some cases, red beeches , which change into flaky grass . Larger poplars can also be found here.

Protection goals

The nature reserve is closely interlinked with the nearby nature reserves Buschei , Lanstroper See and Kurler Busch. The objectives for the area are the preservation and development of semi-natural, mixed deciduous forests rich in old and dead wood, interlinked with extensively used grassland and open spaces as well as fallow areas.
