The nature reserve divides stream valleys and wetlands . The landscape is characterized by arable and pasture areas as well as grassland , interspersed with partially dense wood and bushes . Forest areas are rare and can only be found in the edge areas and on the slopes of the stream valleys. The nature reserve is divided by Stockumer Straße. In the northern part belonging to Barop there are mostly fallow land, in the southern part between Eichlinghofen and Menglinghausen a small oak forest has formed , elsewhere a reed zone made of cattails , and the Menglinghausen cemetery delimits the nature reserve in the south. To the east, the nature reserve is bounded by the renatured Rüpingsbach .

Within the reserve live in different vegetation zones in addition to black-headed gull , carrion crow , owl and buzzard and marsh warbler , reed bunting and grasshopper warbler and willow warbler , garden warbler , cuckoo , goldfinch , woodpecker , robin , wren and Goldammer , pheasant and Elster . The wetlands also provide habitat for numerous insects and amphibians such as common toads , crested newts and pond newts .

Protection goal

Since the nature reserve is very small and also divided by Stockumer Straße and limited by the A 45 motorway and the Rüpingsbach, which ran through the area as a sewer until 2012, measures to preserve the nature reserve are extremely important. The Rüpingsbach has been renatured and now meanders through the area. In addition, a network of biotopes is to take place with other habitats.
