The Beerenbruch nature reserve is located on the border between the two cities of Dortmund and Castrop-Rauxel in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany. In Dortmund there are areas of the nature reserve in the Mengede district , in the Castrop area near the Ickern district .

It covers 22.7 hectares in Dortmund and 61.85 hectares in Castrop-Rauxel. The "Beerenbruch" nature reserve was designated in 1987 by the Arnsberg district government on Dortmund territory, and in 1995 by the Münster district government for the Castrop-Rauxeler part. In 1999 the nature reserve was finally protected in the landscape plan Dortmund-Nord of the city of Dortmund and in the landscape plan Castroper Hügelland of the Recklinghausen district for the Castrop area - i.e. without a time limit.

description

The nature reserve was created around 1950 through mountain subsidence . Here, the Brunosee was created as a subsidence water body. Numerous water birds such as the little grebe , teal and shoveler live and breed at this lake . The lake is overgrown with reeds at its edges . These provide habitat for reed warblers and reed bunting . The Brunosee is bordered by old forest stands, some of which are 110 to 190 years old. The lake is a central part of the nature reserve. In the south the lake is bordered by a railway embankment. Behind this dam are fallow grassland , some of which are heavily wet and bushy. Lake and forest are the habitat of many endangered bird species. The holly has created an almost impenetrable zone in the southern forest area that serves as a retreat for sensitive animal species. Stock pigeons , green woodpeckers , tawny owls and the tree bat live here . Numerous water birds live directly on the lake.

In the northern part, located in the Castrop-Rauxeler area, deciduous forest predominates, consisting of beech , hornbeam and oak . This area is divided by the connecting road between Deininghausen and Ickern and by a railway line running in an east-west direction. There are still some bomb craters in the area, which are filled with water, but have no aquatic vegetation due to the strong shading.

Protection goals

The nature-friendly use by visitors is important for the development of the nature reserve. Great damage was caused by the beaten path in the sensitive bank areas around Lake Bruno. In addition, the feeding of the water birds by the visitors is a problem for the water quality of the lake. The demolition of a dam that separated part of the lake has already taken place. A viewing platform was built for visitors at the end of the demolition.

The most important protection goal is the preservation of this structurally rich mountain subsidence area with reed beds, bushes, wet meadows and forest habitats as well as the organization of a nature-friendly use by visitors.
