In the north it borders the Groppenbach . It covers 23.6 hectares. The "Groppenbruch" nature reserve was designated on June 19, 1986 by means of a temporary seizure by the Arnsberg district government. description

The nature reserve is located on the northern outskirts of Dortmund. It borders the city of Waltrop and the Brambauer district of Lüner . The landscape was shaped by former land weirs . These marked the border between the county of Dortmund and Vest Recklinghausen . The land defense was designed as a double wall with a moat in between. The slopes of the ramparts were planted with bushes and hedges made of hornbeam , hawthorn and also beech . What has remained is a biotope complex consisting of deciduous forest with a high proportion of old wood and pasture grassland . The “Gerstloh” area comprises an old beech and oak forest with a high proportion of dead wood.

To the west of this are pastures that are partially swamped in the bank areas of the stream. However , there are no longer wet meadows here. Numerous small bodies of water with reeds are located within the forest. These old forests with a large proportion of old wood and dead wood, together with sections rich in undergrowth, offer many bird species an ideal breeding area.

Nightingale , green and great spotted woodpecker , barn owl , little owl , blackcap , partridge , meadow pipit , white wagtail live in the nature reserve , and even the lapwing finds an intact breeding area here. The small bodies of water in the nature reserve are also of particular importance for amphibians and dragonflies.

The nature reserve is of particular importance as a retreat and stepping stone biotope in the cultural landscape of the Emscherland on the edge of the Waltrop flat-wave region .

Protection goals

Protection goals for the nature reserve are the preservation and development of a biotope complex, consisting of the landscape parts old forest, grassland and small bodies of water, in order to preserve the section of a structured and species-rich historical cultural landscape. In addition, a buffer zone is to be developed around the core area, and a biotope network with the nearby protected areas Herrentheyer Wald , Im Siesack and Mengeder Heide is important.
