Setup date 1986

The Mengeder Heide nature reserve is located in the Mengede district of Dortmund in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany. It is located directly southeast of the motorway junction between the A 2 and A 45 motorways . In the south it is bounded by the Emscher and covers 15.35 hectares. The "Mengeder Heide" nature reserve was designated on June 19, 1986 by means of a temporary seizure by the Arnsberg district government. On November 30, 1990 it was set in the Dortmund-North landscape plan and on September 2, 2005 in the first change to the landscape plan.

description

The nature reserve is located in the northern part on a former, now overgrown garbage dump, some of which is barely covered. On the other hand, it is strongly shaped by anthropogenic reshaping. The grassland of the Mengeder Heide is lean and very sandy . This sand was needed for the construction of Autobahn 2 in the 1930s. Therefore, the area was cleared and dug up to three meters deep. Depressions and hollows remained in the surface, which were reinforced by the bomb craters of World War II . These depressions tend to become swampy, and some ponds have also formed. Today's Mengeder Heide has little in common with the original natural landscape.

The nature reserve is divided into different forest areas: Oak forest covers an area of around 4.53 ha. The mixed alder forest with other deciduous tree species takes up around 2.23 ha. A birch forest extends over approx. 2.24 hectares and poplars grow on approx. 0.48 hectares. The former landfill takes up approx. 5.87 hectares. The rest of the nature reserve is a wetland and thick, partially impenetrable grassland overgrown with brambles . Bounded by the motorways in the north and west, the Emscher in the south and a settlement in the east, the nature reserve has no connections to other biotopes.

Due to the different structures, the Mengeder Heide nature reserve is an important habitat for very different animal species. In addition to the common frog , which is on the red list , over 50 species of birds live in this nature reserve, of which over 30 of these species breed. The species living in the nature reserve include woodpeckers , tawny owls , blackcocks and nightingales . Due to the decline in poplars, which are not native here and are gradually being removed, there has been a decline in other species such as the small woodpecker and oriole , which mainly breed in the poplars.

Protection goals

Protection goals for the nature reserve are the maintenance and development of a near-natural forest habitat with different levels of humidity. At the same time, the water quality should be improved.
