More than 100 bird species such as gray woodpecker and treecreeper , also day and night claws such as buzzard , hawk and sparrowhawk , tawny owl and long-eared owl could be observed in the forest area, 26 bird species have been proven to breed there. The edge areas of the forest area are also ecologically valuable, especially as a habitat for reptiles and amphibians such as fire salamanders , mountain newts and pond newts , common toads , midwife toads and natterjack toads as well as for common frogs and common frogs . Two streams, eight ponds and many pools are used as spawning grounds. The undisturbed, sunny forest aisles on the two railway lines are inhabited by forest lizards and slow worms.

A provisional amphibian fence was set up on Aplerbeck Waldstrasse as early as 1987 and looked after every year during the spawning season; from 2002 the road was closed to through traffic all year round. A tunnel was built for the amphibians.

Protection goal

As an island biotope, the nature reserve serves the preservation, development and restoration of communities or biotopes of certain wild animal and plant species. The most important protective measures are the preservation of the waters, the securing of the extensive use of grassland and the preservation of the mixed deciduous forests.
