description
The nature reserve is located in the floodplain of a stream with many different names. In the upper reaches of the Langendreerbach join with the Harpener Bach to form the Oelbach . This flows into the Ruhr . Historical names for the Oelbach were also Meeßbach, Blennebach, Mühlenbach, Sprikel, Wiescherbach, Dorfbach, Hevener Bach or Aulbach . The derived name Ahl or Uhl has roughly the meaning of swamp. The Oelbachtal nature reserve is a very structured nature reserve with a wide variety of vegetation types. In addition to deciduous forest there are individual trees and strips of trees. Grassland is framed by forest fringes, with embedded ponds and ponds, surrounded by reed beds as well as the Oelbach and its tributaries.
Over 40 species of birds live and breed in this structurally rich habitat, including wren , tree falcon , dunnock , pheasant , water rail , whinchat , field owl , cuckoo , yellow mocker , chiffchaff , fitis and great spotted woodpecker . Due to the swampy wet meadows , the ponds and watercourses, the amphibian species richness is also very pronounced. In addition to Alpine Newt , Newt , common toad , common frog and pond frog nature reserve provides a habitat for slow-worm and Waldeidechse . One occurrence of the pond mussel is unusual .
Problems of the very narrow nature reserve are the increasing drying of the soil, the spread of tall perennials, especially the nettle, and the visitor pressure , especially from walkers with dogs.
Protection goals
The protection goal for the nature reserve is the preservation of a biotope with pronounced levels of humidity and the surrounding habitats. The existing fish pond, which is apparently also in use, should be redesigned to be closer to nature. The flow of visitors must be made more ecologically compatible by means of visitor management measures so that disturbances to the breeding birds are avoided.
