The Harpener Bach is a river in the east of Bochum and west of Dortmund. It is a tributary of the Oelbach .

Despite impairment by the pit water of the pit systems of the Lorraine colliery and straightening with concrete shells, nature in the Oelbachtal nature reserve and in the Upper Oelbachtal NSG (including Berghofer Holz ) recaptured the Bachtal after mining was shut down.

The stream rises in the Bövinghausen district of Dortmund and is also called Bövinghauser Bach up to the city limits . The stream had many names in earlier times, including Sporkelbecke .

Below the heaps of the Lorraine colliery , it picks up the Gerther Mühlenbach , which rises in the Gerthe district of Bochum .

The Mühlenbachsiepen in Gerthe (right) is followed by Normergersiepen (right) and Stehbock-Siepen (left), Driebusch-Siepen (right) and Siepen am Untersten Feld (left). A bathing pond follows on the right, which is fed by two sieves.

At Haus Holte it feeds the clarification ponds and the mill pond of the Holter mill . In the further course it flows past the dump of the Amalia colliery . At the Ruhrpark, the Harpener Bach feeds the Harpener ponds .

This is also where the former Wiesche house , whose grounds were supplied by the brook, and the Wiescher mill were located.

South of the Wiescher mill, the Harpener Bach takes on the Karolinenbach , which today has disappeared under the Kornharpen central garbage dump and is canalised up to the confluence.

At the Suntum farm (former Suntum mill) it feeds the Ümminger See and then flows together with the Langendreerbach . At this point the Oelbach begins , which flows into the Kemnader See .
