Outflow of the lake

The Ümminger See is an artificially created lake in the Ruhr area city of Bochum . It is located north of Ümmingen in the Bochum districts of Laer , Werne and Langendreer .

description

The lake has an area of 10.43 hectares and is used as a recreational area. The area around the lake is bounded in the west by the A 43 , in the south by the B 226 , in the east by an adjacent industrial park and in the north by the Essen-Überruhr – Bochum-Langendreer railway line .

The lake is fed by the Harpener Bach , which flows through the lake from north to south and drains it via the Oelbach into the Ruhr .

In the Middle Ages , two mill ponds were created as forerunners of the lake at the mill of the Schulte-Suntum farm . With the construction of the Dorothea-Erbstollen for the Vollmond colliery , the contamination with mine water began in the 18th century .

Dumping ponds were created to clear the pit water . One of these ponds was built southwest of the Schulte-Suntum farm. While most of the water flowed directly into the sedimentation pond, there was a ditch on the eastern side as a bypass , which met the stream again below the pond drain.

With the closure of the Robert Müser colliery , the settling pond became superfluous in 1968. In 1976 the facility was expanded to become an integral part of a local recreation area through excavation and bank and lake floor reinforcement . Its current functions include the clarification of wastewater from the districts of Langendreer and Werne, which in the case of old, overloaded sewers (especially when it rains) is fed through the Harpener Bach. The resulting smell of faeces can be clearly perceived (especially in summer). A larger population of cormorants lives at the lake . Also herons are frequently observed.

The bypass trench was filled in as part of the renovation in 1977. However, a part to the southeast of the lake has been preserved as a biotope . After a flood, a pond of backwater was created southwest of the Ümminger See, where another biotope has now formed.

From 1995 to 2009 the Ümminger Summertime event took place at the lake . The focus of the event were concerts in the evening with live music, the model boat regatta in the inner harbor and an open-air disco with the 'Power Tower'.

The leisure activities on the lake include a roller skating rink, on which the “Bochum Lakers” skate hockey club was founded, as well as a large beer garden and a large playground. There used to be a three-story tower here with a giant slide that had to give way. There is also the boules club "Diaboulo Bochum '86 eV" right next to the playground.
