The Gerther Mühlenbach is a flowing body of water that has its source in the Gerthe district of Bochum , feeds the Gerther Mühlenteich and flows south of the Bövinghauser Hellweg further east along the industrial area on the site of the former Lorraine colliery on the Gewerbenstrasse, Dieselstrasse and Daimlerstrasse. The Lorraine chemical works and a coking plant were also located here.

Part of the run is protected in the Upper Oelbachtal nature reserve . It flows into the Bövinghauser Bach or Harpener Bach . Against the background of the upcoming renaturation, it must be examined to what extent the contaminated sites of the industrial area pollute the water body . The groundwater is polluted with cyanides across the board .

In 2018, a measure to improve water quality was announced.
