When the Ruhr Park opened in the Harpen district on November 14, 1964 , it was the second shopping center in Germany after the Main-Taunus-Zentrum in Sulzbach and a novelty for the young Federal Republic.

At the beginning, the shopping center had 24,000 m² of rental space, some of which was available for large department stores and some for smaller specialist shops. The Ruhr Park shopping center on the approx. 254,000 m² property in Bochum with meanwhile 125,000 m² rental space (including 71,500 m² sales area) and an estimated turnover in 2013 of around 243 million euros is one of the largest shopping centers in Germany . Around 2,500 employees work in around 140 shops; There are around 4,800 free parking spaces available to customers.

The founder of the Ruhr Park shopping center was the investor Edward J. Roberts, who sold the center to Westdeutsche ImmobilienBank in 1978 . Since October 1, 2010, the Perella Weinberg Real Estate Fund has owned the Ruhr Park, which is managed by Unibail-Rodamco Germany .

The Ruhr Park is located outside the city center and has plenty of parking space. At the time of the construction of the Ruhr Park, the first pedestrian zones were also created in the surrounding inner cities, which made the city area more attractive but also more difficult to access. All of this sparked fears in the retail sector, who feared that the “ green field ” shopping center would lose sales at its other locations. Nevertheless, this concept is still groundbreaking for many other shopping centers in Germany.

The “Via Bartolo” restaurant area was opened in October 2001. 13 gastronomic concepts are arranged in a ring around a central place with dining tables and seating groups (approx. 280 seats) and are intended to invite you on a “gastronomic trip around the world” by offering dishes from different countries. The dining area is loosened up by a season-appropriate decoration with plants and sculptures.

After a renovation from 2011 to 2015, the Ruhr Park reopened on November 4, 2015 including the new “Südmall” and now has 115,000 m² of rental space.

Connection

The shopping center is well connected to the road network with the nearby A 40 and A 43 motorways, which, for example, contributed to the establishment of the UCI cinema complex in 1991 . The public transport connection is made by eight bus routes with three stops around the Ruhrpark. Of these, however, only three lines go to downtown Bochum, which also have important development functions for residential areas on the way to the Ruhr Park. This results in a correspondingly long journey time. A diploma thesis published in 2001 dealt with the possibilities of connecting the Ruhr Park directly to the tram network.

The landmark of the Ruhr Park is the yellow tent erected in 1985 and supported by a 42-meter-high tubular steel mast. In 2012 the yellow tent was replaced by a white one as part of the modernization of the Ruhr Park. On the northern edge there is an overhead line mast (mast 69, annex 2610) of the Amprion decorated with balls .
