Harpen (actually "Kirchharpen" to distinguish it from Kornharpen ) is a district in the northeast of Bochum in North Rhine-Westphalia . The statistical district 38 Harpen / Rosenberg has around 8,800 inhabitants.

history

Harpen existed as a village community before the year 1000. The St. Vinzentius Church , with elements dated around the year 1000, proves this.

Harpen farmers were involved in an episode of the Great Dortmund Feud (1388/89), which led to the tradition of the annual Maischützenfest under the leadership of the Bochum May Evening Society .

Half a dozen mines ( Zeche Prinz von Preußen , Zeche Heinrich Gustav , Zeche Amalia and others) were built in and around the agrarian core around 1850 under the leadership of Harpener Bergbau AG , which later became one of the largest mining groups in the Ruhr.

Harpen was born on April 1, 1926 by the Law on the reorganization of municipal boundaries in the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial districts by Gerthe incorporated. From 1965 the Auf dem Rosenberg settlement was built in the northern part of Harpen over a period of ten years to alleviate the housing shortage in Bochum. The settlement consists of around 1,300 apartments with over 4,000 residents.

Leisure and culture

In Harpen there are two football clubs, TuS Harpen and Blau Weiß Grümerbaum, which was initially founded in Hiltrop and then moved to Harpen.

There are two parishes, the Catholic Heilig-Geist-Gemeinde with the Heilig-Geist-Kirche and the Evangelical parish of Harpen with the over 1000 year old St. Vincent's Church.

In the border area between Harpen and the Bochum districts of Werne and Kornharpen is the Ruhr-Park , one of the largest German shopping centers.
