Riemke is a district of Bochum in the Bochum-Mitte district with 7604 inhabitants (December 2016).

Location and townscape

Riemke is in the north of Bochum and borders on the city of Herne . In the Bochum area, Riemke borders the districts of Bergen , Hiltrop , Grumme and Hofstede .

In the center of Riemke is the market square, where a weekly market has been held for decades. There are also numerous shops and restaurants around it.

The listed parish church of St. Franziskus is worth seeing .

In Riemke, the Tippelsberg is one of the highest peaks in Bochum. The Tippelsberg marks one of the last branches of the Ardey Mountains . To the northwest there are almost no more natural elevations. A dump of rubble was heaped on the already high mountain, which was shut down at the end of 2004. The mountain offers excellent foresight. Parts of Dortmund city center can be seen in the east. To the west, the city center of Essen and the tetrahedron in Bottrop can be recognized. To the north the view extends to Haltern . The mountain is used for kite flying and is a popular meeting place on New Year's Eve .

In the east of Riemke lies the Zillertal nature reserve.

Riemke has a connection to the U35 (Bochum – Herne) underground line, as well as to federal highway 51 and motorway 43 . The central stop is the Riemke Markt underground station . In addition, Riemke has a connection to the railway network with a stop on the Bochum Gelsenkirchen line ( Glückauf-Bahn ).

history

A first written mention of the village "Rymbecke" took place in a lifting tab from the late 9th century (880) of Werden Abbey , to the kind be issued had.

Riemke became known through numerous shafts of the Constantin der Große colliery and the large freight station on the main railway line from Bochum to Gelsenkirchen . Just north following the freight station was the former mine train station of the mines Constantine the Great and Hannibal .

With the coming into force of the law on the reorganization of the municipal boundaries in the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial districts , the municipality of Riemke was incorporated into Bochum on April 1, 1926. 43 hectares were reclassified to Herne .

From 1957, Graetz produced televisions in Riemke until the company was taken over by the Finnish company Nokia in 1987 . In 1991 the changeover to the production of cell phones took place; in January 2008 Nokia announced the closure of the plant without replacement, which was implemented on July 1, 2008.

In a major fire in the morning hours of June 25, 2007, the warehouse on Schöllmannstrasse, built around 1920, of the former main workshop of the Constantin der Große / Hannibal colliery station burned down. Only a few weeks later, on July 16, 2007, a fire broke out in a warehouse belonging to the processing company Kost, which set the entire building on fire and could only be brought under control after three hours. According to the company, the damage caused amounts to around 1.8 million euros. In August 2013 there was another major fire on the premises of the company AGR-DAR GmbH . In August 2015, AGR-DAR sold the site, which it had not used since the end of 2014, to a real estate development company from Bochum.

The through station Bochum-Riemke (formerly Bochum-NOKIA, before that Bochum-Graetz) is on the Bochum – Gelsenkirchen railway line . With two tracks on two platforms, both of which are intended for regular regional traffic, it belongs to station category  5. The stop with the abbreviation EBGZ can record around 40 train journeys on weekends, and twice as many on weekdays. In addition, many freight trains run on the route, especially at night.
