Sundern (Bochum)
Sundern is a district of the city of Bochum in the Ruhr area and is located in the southwest of the city, south of the Weitmarer Holz , adjacent to the Weitmar-Mark district and the Stiepel district .
history
Until the late 1930s, large open-air theater plays were held annually on the Sundern open-air theater on Wienkopp. The stage had 2048 seats.
During the Second World War , the residents sought protection from air raids in the air raid shelter at Wienkopp, near the former open-air theater. On March 14, 1945 two bombs fell, one in front of the entrance and the other in the tunnel. Of 150 people, 58 died (including at least 12 children) and 20 were wounded.
Sundern was best known through the Institute for Environmental and Future Research / Bochum Observatory , which in 1957 was the first institute in Western Europe to receive the signals from the Russian satellite " Sputnik " and thus made Bochum the "space news center of Europe".
Infrastructure
Sundern can be reached by public transport using the Bogestra bus line 354 . The line runs every 20 minutes on weekdays and stops in Sundern at the Breukerholz, Bochum Observatory and Bochum Sundern stops.
