history

Historically, this forest area was many times larger. Under the chairmanship of the wood judge , who was based at Haus Weitmar , the “Weitmarer Mark” was used as a cooperative . With a royal decree of June 12, 1756, the forest was privatized and from 1817 to 1829 distributed to 21 members of the Mark. The majority was then cut down and settled. Markstrasse was built during this period.

In addition, hard coal was mined here in Weitmarer Holz early on . According to legend, a swineherd named Jörgen found her by chance, because the fire that he lit in a cave in the evening still glowed and gave off warmth in the morning. A memorial, the so-called “ Jörgenstein ” , was erected on the street “Zum Bliestollen ”.

The Weitmarer Holz has recently suffered noticeable damage from the hurricane “Kyrill” in 2007 and from the low pressure area “Ela” in 2014.
