Emergence

According to the storm center Germany , hot air flowed from the south to Germany between the low Ela over the Eastern Atlantic and the high Wolfgang over Eastern Europe during the Pentecost days, which heated up to 38 degrees on Whit Monday. Then the Ela II marginal depression formed over the English Channel , the front system of which transported cool air. In the run-up to the front, thunderstorm cells arose over northern France and Belgium , which in the evening grew together into a large thunderstorm complex and produced their own circulation . This resulted in a mesoscale convective system (MCS) that crossed large parts of North Rhine-Westphalia with a bow echo . When the bow echo passed through, gusts up to hurricane strength occurred in a strip from the Rhineland to the Ruhr area. At the airport Dusseldorf wind speeds were measured up to 142 km / h. In some areas, around 40 liters of precipitation fell per square meter.

Damage

In the storm , which led to thunderstorms with squalls, rain and sometimes hail, a total of six people died on June 9 between 8 and 11 p.m. in Düsseldorf , Essen , Cologne and Krefeld ; In addition, 30 people were seriously injured and 37 slightly injured in North Rhine-Westphalia.

There was severe destruction and traffic disruption that lasted for several days. The Deutsche Bahn stated that the storm damage to the rail network by Ela would be significantly greater than in the case of Hurricane Kyrill in 2007. The State Office for Forest and Wood NRW registered almost 80,000 solid cubic meters of tree wood in the forests as damaged wood nationwide , 61,000 of which in the districts of the regional forest offices Ruhr and Lower Rhine, overall significantly less than during hurricane Kyrill. In the affected urban areas, every fourth tree was uprooted or kinked. As a result, the recreational function there is significantly impaired.

The insured damage was initially estimated at at least 100 million euros. One day later, surveyed insurance companies corrected their estimates significantly upwards. At the beginning of July 2014, insurers put the damage at around 650 million euros.

On Whit Monday, June 9, 2014, the thunderstorm front of the low Ela moved in the evening around 9 p.m. from the west over Düsseldorf and caused severe devastation in the urban area. Three people died and eleven were injured in the storm. Seven emergency services were injured during the rescue and clean-up work. In a preliminary official damage balance of the city administration of Düsseldorf it was reported on July 3rd that around 22,500 of the around 69,000 street trees in the city were badly damaged; 2500 of them fell over. In the city cemeteries, 2000 trees were damaged or destroyed in the storm. Urban buildings, facilities and transport infrastructures were also badly affected. About 60 percent of the trees in the Rheinpark Golzheim were damaged; the Düsseldorf court garden was also badly hit. The damage in the parks earned the city the nickname "Dschungeldorf". By June 13, 2014, 3,101 damage locations were reported to the city fire brigade, almost three times more than during Hurricane Kyrill. A 320-year-old copper beech was uprooted in the Gerresheim district . The Bundeswehr sent 330 soldiers and around 50 vehicles from the 100 Engineer Regiment to Dusseldorf for clean-up work, including “mobile chainsaw squads” and engineer tanks . The total damage to the city amounted to 64 million euros according to the first balance. On July 3, 2014, 15 million euros were approved to repair the current damage to the urban infrastructure.

release

On July 5th, the wildlife park in the Grafenberg Forest and other green areas were released for use again. With the beginning of the summer holidays, the closure of the 192 sports facilities in the city area was also lifted. A total of 25 helpers were busy with the clean-up work for over 1,600 hours, around 200 solid cubic meters of wood and 500 cubic meters of tree crown were disposed of. As a result, local timber prices fell by more than half.

Reforestation

As part of a larger fundraising campaign by the city, an original idea has been used in Düsseldorf since October 2014 to attract donations for new planting. In agreement with the responsible authorities, the Fan Factory asked for a donation call to be sprayed on the fallen tree trunks with a QR code shown on the donation page, which citizens can scan with their smartphones. The template required for this was provided free of charge. The action was accompanied by educational posters near the sprayed remains of trees. Another campaign was to use the wood from 35 fallen trees in the courtyard garden to make 17,000 breakfast boards and to use the proceeds for reforestation.

Mülheim an der Ruhr

The Essen police drove a total of 950 storm-related missions by the morning of June 13, 2014. The Essen fire brigade registered 2,350 missions in the same time. When the festival Open Air Werden was evacuated , there were nine seriously and six slightly injured. For the thousands of visitors, a large care center was set up in a nearby gym, which was operated the entire night for the many underage festival visitors, among others. Any festival traffic via the rail network and special buses was interrupted for many hours. Hundreds of cars were also destroyed by trees. In addition to the shores of Lake Baldeney and the Grugapark , the cemeteries were also closed. The Essen Central was cut off from Whit Monday until June 14, 2014 by train. In Essen, the subsequent clean-up and sawing work was supported by the Essen aid organizations as well as by the spontaneous helpers of the Essen grabs an initiative that were formed at the time .

A total of 20,000 trees were destroyed in Essen.

In Neuss, street trees, park trees and trees on private property were damaged or uprooted on Whit Monday. The municipal schools and the Neuss music school did not teach until the end of the week because the way to school was not safe. The summer night run and the culture festival also had to be canceled.

Duisburg

Storm damage occurred mainly in the southeast of the city, in the city forest and in the Huckinger Mark . As one of the few cities in the Ruhr area, Duisburg did not benefit from state funds because, according to the German Weather Service, only 6% of the city's area was affected. The city's environmental department regretted that Duisburg should not receive any state aid after the severe damage caused by the Pentecostal storm low. "Even if Duisburg was only partially affected and the damage was not as high as in other cities, the amount of damage of 2.5 million euros for a city in the budget renovation is no small matter," it said in the message.

Sauerland

On the Kahler Asten , 38 liters per square meter fell in 24 hours. In Schmallenberg , hailstones over four centimeters in size were registered in two thunderstorms within two days. The hail damaged numerous vehicles, skylights and glass greenhouses in several Schmallenberg districts. In addition, the hailstones damaged skylights and the roofs of several kindergartens, schools and public buildings. The Schmallenberg school center was flooded with water from the roof that penetrated through destroyed skylights. For this reason, the secondary school of the school center was closed until June 13, 2014. In the Hochsauerland region, a total of 900 dented vehicles were reported to LVM Versicherung alone by June 17, 2014 . The amount of damage up to this date was 1.3 million euros. As of June 20, 2014, the Provinzial insurance registered more than 800 hail-related vehicle damage in the Sauerland. A hardware store in Meschede was hit by a stormy gust of around 100 km / h. All garden houses were thrown up and destroyed. The debris flew over the entire site. The property damage is around 50,000 euros.
