Be open air
The Open Air Werden is a "Free & Outside" festival that takes place annually on Whit Monday in Löwental in the Werden district of Essen . The Essen Youth Welfare Office and the Essen Rock Funding Association are the organizers. V. on. In addition to a wide variety of rock and independent music styles on the main stage, the festival area has been expanded to include the electronic meadow area since 2003 , where DJs offer electronic music.
history
The history of the festival began in 1980 on two truck beds, divided between a folk and rock stage, which were shared by eight bands on this mostly sunny day. Around 600 spectators were present at the first festival and saw bands such as Traumdancer, Polaris and Urwerk. A year later, nothing happened because no sequel was initially planned. The second Whitsun Open Air took place in 1982. Here, too, a truck loading area was converted into a stage. With the decision to offer an annual event for the local music scene and its visitors, an event stage was installed for the first time in 1983.
Over the years, the festival has developed into an integral part of the Essen music scene. The bands became more international, and yet the local connection is still important today. Promotion of young talent and support for bands based in Essen are taken into account. The fact that parents and children are now exploring the offers together across generations speaks for the development of the event. In addition to the appearances, there are also food stalls, drinks stands and flea market-like offers from textiles and sound carriers to jewelry.
After the accident at the Love Parade in 2010 , the safety requirements for major events were tightened. The organizers of the Whitsun Open Air Festival in Essen were also forced to prove a new security concept. In February 2011 it became clear that the special features of the area in Löwental Werden require more extensive considerations and measures than originally thought. The time until the festival day 2011 was not enough to implement the security concept and the associated measures. The organizers had to cancel the 30th anniversary.
The Open Air took place again in 2012 under the condition that no more than 13,000 people were allowed to stay on the festival site and a completely revised security concept. At the Open Air 2014 there were several injuries when the event had to be canceled due to the storm in the low pressure area Ela and the area had to be evacuated.
