Hot Water Music is a post-hardcore - band from Gainesville , Florida , named after a book by Charles Bukowski .

style

Hot Water Music live at Rock am Ring 2019

In the tradition of the British punk band Leatherface , they combine rough and hoarse vocals with original and melancholic guitar work, which is emphasized by elaborate chord progressions and complex melody structures. Jason Black's bass playing is particularly pronounced and is characterized by quick finger-picking. The two-part singing is also excellent. In the texts mostly personal experiences are described, such as Minno , which deals with the suicide of an acquaintance. The band is also known for its emotionally charged live shows.

With one exception, the album artwork was designed by artist friend Scott Sinclair.

history

The band was formed in 1994 by Chuck Ragan ( guitar , vocals ), Chris Wollard (guitar, vocals), Jason Black ( electric bass ) and George Rebelo ( drums ). They met at the University of Florida there . Due to time constraints, the band initially only toured in a smaller environment, but has already produced several albums. They later played concerts mainly in North America and Europe .

The concert in the Hardback ( Live at the Hardback ) in 1999 was actually intended as a farewell concert. However, Hot Water Music quickly found their way back together. On their European tour in 2000 they played a few concerts a. a. with the befriended band Muff Potter , with whom they also recorded a split CD .

In 2005, singer and guitarist Chuck Ragan decided to look after his family more after he was married for the second time. The band announced on May 14, 2006 a longer creative break.

The three remaining members formed with the new member Todd "Wonderboy" Rockhill to form The Draft , which stylistically resembles Hot Water Music. On September 8, 2006 their first album In a Million Pieces was released .

Chuck Ragan released his solo live album Los Feliz on May 18, 2007 . His folk and bluegrass- inspired music is limited to acoustic guitar and harmonica. He is often accompanied by a mandolin and a fiddle when performing. On August 23, 2007, the first studio album Feast or Famine was released . Since then, Ragan has released several other studio and live albums, as well as a variety of 7 "singles.

In the spring of 2008, Hot Water Music were again on tour with Chuck Ragan.

George Rebelo was the drummer for Against Me! From 2009 until the end of 2010 . . During this time he was replaced by Dave Raun ( Lagwagon ).

In May 2012 a new studio album called Exister was released . In the course of the release of this record, the band also played several club and festival shows in Germany.

Chris Wollard has not been at concerts since 2018 due to health problems. When performing live, Wollard's part is taken over by Chris Cresswell, frontman of The Flatliners .

In July 2019, Hot Water Music released a new EP called Shake up the Shadows. Chris Wollard is also involved in the recording, while Chris Cresswell does the backing vocals. In 2019, HWM played several shows as part of their 25th anniversary. Depending on the concert, the two albums Caution and No Division were played in full length. The tour included venues in the USA, Brazil, the UK and Germany.

Side projects

Chris Wollard and George Rebelo were in The Blacktop Cadence , who played quieter emo rock.

Wollard and Chuck Ragan founded Rumbleseat , where they played folk songs with acoustic guitars and covered pieces by Johnny Cash as well as their own compositions .

In addition, Wollard was active in the hardcore punk band CRO (W) S as a singer and guitarist. The songs seem faster and harder than with Hot Water Music, but mostly forego melody. The album Durty Bunny was released in 2003 as an LP on Sounds of Subterrania and digitally on Wollard's own label

In 2009 Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves released their album of the same name (No Idea) on which George Rebelo played drums.
