Muff Potter (in its own spelling muff potter. ) Is a German band from Rheine or Münster . It was founded in 1993 and is named after the tramp who was innocently accused of murder from Mark Twain's novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer . On December 12, 2009 the band broke up after a farewell tour, but announced in 2018 that they wanted to go on tour again.

Band history

Beginnings and finding a style

Muff Potter was formed during the first band rehearsal on May 9, 1993 in Rheine from the bands Sexton and the Frusties , Misplaced Childhood and Aids Dayz . The first two releases - the demo tape Bambule - Little stories from the big prison and the first self-titled LP - were recorded in the original line-up, before Mongo and shortly afterwards Bernd Ahlert left the band.

The music style, according to their own definition, Angry Pop Music , is from English and American indie / punk rock such as Hüsker Dü , Dinosaur Jr. , Wipers , The Cure , Leatherface , but also from German bands such as Slime , The Notwist , ... But Alive , Boxhamsters or EA80 shaped.

In particular, the releases from the band's early stages strongly suggest the close connection to the punk movement at the time. What distinguishes Muff Potter from many other punk bands, however, is their profound lyrics without any bold or strongly politically influenced phrases. While the publications up to and including Scream if you burn were almost pure punk rock songs , many other style influences were already evident on curb stories . Examples of titles from the old albums are Frozen Man Syndrome , the inability to feel feelings, a term coined by Charles Bukowski , with samples from the Bukowski film Barfly or !!! (1–39) , a nostalgic hymn of praise for the radio play Three Question Marks of Childhood and at the same time an accounting for what has become of it.

Later the band also used strings or keyboard instruments for musical accompaniment. On the last album Gute Aussicht , Mein Freund, das Wrack is the probably sparsely orchestrated Muff Potter song, which for large parts only needs an acoustic guitar and an accordion . Probably not least because of the great friendship with the Grand Hotel van Cleef and its bands, Muff Potter got closer and closer to their friends from Kettcar and Tomte musically and appealed to an ever wider range of listeners.

Today will be won, please

During the recordings for Today Will Be Won, Please and the subsequent tour, the band was supported by Jule März as a background singer, who gave the Muff Potter songs a completely new note. March also sings the Team-Dresch - Cover Don't Try Suicide , which appeared on the sampler There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (2004, Dancing In The Dark ) together with various other cover versions by other artists (including Tomte and Tagtraum ) . March left the band after the end of the tour. In the course of this tour, Muff Potter appeared in the original line-up for the first and last time since 1994 during a concert in Hamburg's Hafenklang on June 5, 2003 . With Placebo Domingo became the Today is obtained, please , the first CD single of the band's history published. At the same time there was another premiere for the band with the first video clip.

Huck's record box, Universal and Von Wegen

The band has been running their own label since the self-titled debut album with Huck's record box . Like the band name, the name is based on the Huckleberry-Finn universe. However, the 2007 album Steady Fremdkörper and its predecessor Von Wegen were marketed by the (major) label Universal . While Von Due was only distributed by Universal, but not financed, Steady Fremdkörper was fully covered by Universal. Like their predecessors, the records were still released by Huck's record box. These new possibilities led, among other things, to the fact that with Alles nur stolen , the opening title and first single from Von Wegen , a Muff Potter song got a TV presence and ran several times a week on MTV . In the video for the song, the well-known German actor Axel Prahl plays along with the band's friend, actress Stella Denis , which brought the clip some attention. Denis also spoke on from because in the song Born stupid quote from TC Boyle's short story gatherers and hunters , published in anthology carnality . In addition to the real film, there is also a comic video for Alles nur stolen , which the graphic artist Arne Kulf - also known under his pseudonym AKU! - developed for the band. This video appeared together with an animated live recording of a reading by Nagels (under the title Show Me Heaven, Fucking Hell! ) On the bonus DVD of the Von Wegen album. Arne Kulf also developed various other designs and layouts for the band.

Following from because the band released in April 2006, the EP Everything I need , contains in addition to the already included on the album title song four previously unreleased songs. The video for the song consists of live and tour film recordings, which are underlaid with the studio version of the song. This EP was released at the same time as the only online version Unplugged in the rehearsal room . A little later, My Huckleberry Friend, an English-language version of Von Wegen, was published on the Japanese market. The trigger for this extraordinary measure was that Ingo Knollmann from the Donots and his label Solitary Man Records saw opportunities to gain an international foothold.

Steady foreign bodies and split singles

During the Visions Spring Tour in April and May 2007, the band presented new songs from the upcoming album Steady Fremdkörper for the first time . The single photo booth was already on radio and television. As part of the promotional work on the album, singer Nagel was a guest on MTV TRL alongside Daniel Küblböck and Nevio Passaro . This performance caused mixed reactions among the band's supporters. Another promotional measure was the so-called wish concerts - based on the song title on Steady Fremdkörper - at which the band played a free concert in a bar or a snack bar in Berlin, Hamburg and Münster on three consecutive evenings. The concerts were filmed and, similar to the video for Alles was ich sucht, edited into a kind of live video. The online single Wunschkonzert was released on September 17, 2007.

Guitarist Dennis Scheider broke his arm on June 28, 2007 after attending a Kettcar concert in the Skater's Palace in Münster, so that in July 2007 Muff Potter had to play two concerts for three people.

During Are you ready, steady foreign bodies go! -Tour in September and October 2007 the band invited the singer friend of Hot Water Music Chuck Ragan to support the band . In the course of the joint concerts, a 7 " split single , limited to 2,000 copies , was released, on which Muff Potter the Chuck Ragan song The Boat and Chuck Ragan the Muff Potter song Bring Yourself Home or See Yourself To Covered The Door . During these concerts it happened daily that Nagel would go on stage during a song to Chuck Ragan to sing with him, while Chuck Ragan entered the stage in return for Muff Potter's rendition of The Boat to get in the mood .

Hot Water Music and Muff Potter had already released a joint split single with one song each ( Hotfilter by Muff Potter, Seein 'Diamonds by Hot Water Music) in 2003, which was part of the tenth anniversary of the Münster Mailorder Green Hell at the birthday festival was distributed free of charge to all visitors in the Skater's Palace and was then offered sporadically in the Green Hell range for several years.

Singer Nagel also released a joint 7 "single with Chuck Ragan called Snapshot in the spring of 2008 , on which both sing two completely new songs in a duet. The single was released on clear vinyl.

Birthday concerts and doctors tour

After the band had announced a longer break after the last concerts for the album Steady Fremdkörper in November 2007, they organized a new tour in May 2008 on the occasion of the band's fifteen-year existence, which was called Wisdom and Dementia . The tour took the band to Berlin, Hamburg, Kaiserslautern, Münster and Jena. In Kaiserslautern the band played exactly on their fifteenth birthday, while in Münster they met again with Hot Water Music. The birthday tour was announced by four trailers, and a longer birthday film was shown before the performances.

In June of the same year, Muff Potter played six concerts on the Jazzfäst tour of the Die Ärzte opening act. After a joint concert in Losheim on June 26, 2004, this was the second invitation as a support act. In addition to the birthday and support shows, Muff Potter only played three festivals in 2008 - one of them for the first time in years just a few kilometers from their home town of Rheine - as well as a benefit concert for Hamburg's Molotow and a concert as opening act for Kettcar in Große Freiheit 36 , during which the chorus for The Party Is Over , the first featured song on the following album, was recorded for later use on the final album.

Good view and resolution

In February 2009 the band played three concerts in Wiesbaden, Leipzig and Dortmund to introduce a few new pieces ( Me and so , the party is over ). The concert in the Dortmund FZW was also the last concert that took place there, because the FZW was then torn down and rebuilt at a new location. Muff Potter also played the first concert in the new FZW on September 11th, 2009.

After the song Blitzkredit Bop was heard in advance on MySpace, Muff Potter released the video for this first single on March 30, 2009. The associated seventh and final album by the band was titled Gute Aussicht and was released on April 17, 2009. Since the contract with Universal was not renewed, Gute Aussicht was again released entirely via Huck's record box. The album was released on CD and LP with the attached download code for download in AIFF format. According to many opinions, the album is rougher than the one released by Universal and thus ties in with older releases, but also has many very calm and mass-compatible passages. Lyrically, it is often based on the book Wo die wilden Maden Graben by songwriter Nagel , published in February 2007 . The line "But he's stuck in his trench / Then the wild maggots eat him" in figure skating without sound refers, for example, to the song Mein Schützengraben published on the first LP and to the title of Nagel's novel. The first edition of the LP version is pressed on yellow vinyl , limited to 1,000 copies and sold out very quickly. The following editions are pressed on black vinyl.

In the spring of 2009 Muff Potter played a relatively short tour of the album before they used the summer for extensive festival visits. On July 28, 2009, the band announced their breakup. The separation had been planned since 2007, but was suppressed and forgotten because of the band's birthday to be celebrated in 2008 and the following concert requests. On August 14th, 2009 the band played both their last festival and their last open-air appearance at the Rocco del Schlacko Festival in Püttlingen.

On August 19, 2009 the band announced the dates of their farewell tour in December, which should end the band's history on December 12, 2009 with the last concert in the Sputnikhalle in Münster. However, as the concert in the Sputnikhalle was sold out very soon, it was moved to the nearby Jovel. Before that, during the upcoming European tour of Hot Water Music at the end of November during two concerts in Cologne and Wiesbaden, the long-time companions met for the last time. For Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt -Abschiedstour was the limited edition of 1,000 pieces 7 "single Goodbye published containing the A-side, the same EA80 cover. The B-side contains a new, slower and stripped down version of 22 tracks later , which is now called 23 tracks later , but the text of both versions is the same.

Muff Potter's last concert ended on December 12, 2009 with the song 100 kilos .

Re-union

On February 22nd, 2018, Muff Potter performed three songs after a reading by Thorsten Nagelschmidt without their guitarist Dennis Scheider, who was represented by Felix Gebhard . Nobody wanted to talk about a reunion of the band after the performance. On August 25th, Muff Potter performed with full cast at the Jamel Rocks the Forester Festival. In 2019 they played 12 individual concerts and were represented at six festivals. In November 2019 they also played as a special guest at two concerts by Hot Water Music . The future of the band initially remained open.

During the Corona crisis in spring 2020, Muff Potter released new music for the first time after an eleven year break: on April 8, 2020, the single What do you want digitally appeared on her band's own label . The new song is the result of a session in December 2019, during which the band wanted to find out "[...] whether we can or want to make new music together." An album was not initially announced explicitly, but the band intensified with new ones Appearances on social media platforms their public presence.

Political commitment

Since 2005 the band has been part of the project No Bock on Nazis of the punk band ZSK , whose supporters also include Die Toten Hosen , Die Ärzte , Donots , Madsen , Julia Hummer and Culcha Candela . Singer Thorsten “Nagel” Nagelschmidt said in an interview with the Kölner Stadtanzeiger that he had previously been active in an anti-grouping himself and that he also approves of illegal actions against right-wing extremists.

That was also the case with us: two years ago I really wanted to break up the band because I didn't want to play in this constellation anymore. We also had crisis talks there - and then I just forgot. We played an excellent tour with Chuck Ragan in the opening act, went to North Africa with the Goethe-Institut, had a record company that supported us and had a management team.
