Wipers is an American punk band from Portland , founded in 1977 by guitarist and singer Greg Sage. She played in changing line-ups with the musically dominant Greg Sage as the only constant.

history

The original line-up consisted of Sam Henry on drums, Dave Koupal on bass and vocalist Greg Sage on guitar. The first album Is This Real? was released in 1979. The band achieved greater notoriety when Kurt Cobain described them as one of his main musical influences and with Nirvana two songs ("D-7" and "Return of the Rat") by Is This Real? covered.

In 1992 the tribute album Eight Songs For Greg Sage And The Wipers (on vinyl ) and Fourteen Songs For Greg Sage and The Wipers (as audio CD ) were released, on which Nirvana, Hole and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth are represented.

Greg Sage now runs the Zeno Records label in Phoenix .

Style and reception

While the first three LP releases are characterized by short, heavy, catchy pieces (with a few exceptions on Youth Of America ), the songs on the later albums are slower, less explosive and heavily interspersed with guitar solos. The touch-and-go - Fanzine described the sound of the band as unique; she refuses to accept fashions and ignores her surroundings, and the “cracking guitar sound” of the debut album is “dynamite”.
